    Hello, My name is Omar Valencia, I'm a freshman at FIU, taking ENC1101.  I will be writing two short responses, and a synthesis blog. One of the short responses will be on "Superman and Me" , and the other one would be on "One Voice".

  According to Sherman Alexie in “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” he talks about the joy he has when reading and writing and how he learned to read from a superman comic book, when he was 3 years old.     He describes his childhood and the influence his dad and books had on him. How reading change his life for the better, pushing him to get and education. He explores themes of literacy, education, and overcoming stereotypes in his writings and hopes to influence kids through his work.           Sherman Alexie emphasis the importance of literacy and education in overcoming stereotypes.     To inspire native American students to believe in themselves and in the power of education.        Sherman Alexie employs various rhetorical and literary techniques to convey his message.     He uses ethos to establish his credibility as a writer and pathos to evoke strong emotions into his reader...

One Voice

"One Voice" by Susan Madera is a personal essay, that focuses on the author experience with learning English as a second language, her essay highlights her emotional and social difficulties of navigating two languages. Through these experiences she realize that using her voice no matter how small it may have seem, can make an impact. The essay emphasizes the importance of courage, integrity, and taking responsibility for creating a positive change.  Susan Madera emphasis the importance of moral responsibility that people have to stand up against injustice, even if it's uncomfortable or unpopular. People can create a change. She wants to inspire her readers to be brave, and use their voice to do right.  In "one Voice" Susan Madera uses various techniques to convey her message she uses personal storytelling to share her real experience from her life to the readers helping them connect to her through emotions. Reading "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me"by Sherman Alexie and "one voice" by Susan Madera, taught me how important it is for writers to make intentional choices based on there audience and purpose. Both essays are personal narratives that use emotion to connect with readers, but they differ in their rhetorical situations and how they deliver their message. Alexie's audience is mainly Native Americans students and people who may not understand the challenges they face in their life's. His purpose is to show how literacy gave him power and allowed him to challenge low exceptions placed on him. While Madera's audience is english leaners and anyone who has felt unheard. Her purpose is to show that even a small voice can create a change.  Both authors use pathos to create emotional connections with their readers, but they use it in different ways.
